Hosting family or friends for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year's means a different kind of clean than your usual weekly upkeep. Here's how to handle both ends of it — getting ready before guests arrive, and resetting fast once they're gone.
Before Guests Arrive: The Pre-Holiday Deep Clean
Give yourself at least a few days of buffer before your event, and focus your energy on the spaces guests will actually use and notice:
- Guest bathroom — scrub tile and grout, polish fixtures, restock toilet paper and hand towels
- Guest bedroom — fresh linens, dusted surfaces, clear closet space if guests are staying over
- Kitchen — this is where you'll be working hardest during the event, so start from a completely clean base: inside the fridge (to make room for food), stovetop, and counters
- Living and dining areas — baseboards, light fixtures, and upholstery get noticed more than usual when there are extra eyes in the room
Book early: Thanksgiving and the two weeks around Christmas are our busiest stretch of the year. If you want professional help before your event, we recommend booking 2-3 weeks out rather than the week of.
The Week Of: Final Touches
In the days right before guests arrive, a lighter pass is usually enough on top of the deep clean:
- Fresh towels in every bathroom guests will use
- Clear the entryway — shoes, coats, and clutter are the first thing guests see
- Quick declutter of guest-visible surfaces — countertops, coffee tables, mantels
- Vacuum high-traffic areas one more time right before arrival
After Guests Leave: The Post-Holiday Reset
The day after hosting is usually the last thing you want to spend cleaning, but a few things are worth handling quickly before they set in:
- Spills and stains — wine, gravy, and cranberry sauce on carpet or upholstery are far easier to treat fresh than after they've dried in
- Kitchen deep reset — oven, stovetop grates, and inside the fridge after days of holiday cooking
- Guest room turnover — strip and wash linens, air out the room
- General reset — floors, bathrooms, and trash after several days of extra household traffic
If stains made it onto carpet or rugs during the event, our carpet cleaning service handles holiday spills that a quick blot didn't fully lift. For the full house reset, a deep clean after the holidays covers everything a standard clean doesn't — grout, baseboards, inside appliances — so your home actually feels reset, not just tidied.
How Far Ahead Should You Book?
We generally need at least 7 days' advance notice for bookings, but the weeks around Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's fill up well before that. If you know you're hosting, the safest window is 2-3 weeks ahead for a pre-event clean, and booking your post-holiday reset at the same time means one less thing to remember once the season gets busy.
